"Every moment of your life is pregnant with the next
second of your life."
- Jim Carrey
Have you ever suffered from inertia?
Over the summer months I was suffering from inertia re finishing my next book. I knew I had to break the pattern of what I was doing to move to the next level. Yet very often in life, we don't do what we know we should do...
I noticed that I had built up a pattern of going on google to research something for the book then I found two hours of my time was gone because I had become distracted by something else on google.
What did I do to stop the inertia?
I switched the computer off and set myself a time limit when I did need to research something. I also came across an excellent new book by Marshall Goldsmith called 'Mojo'.
I first heard Marshall speak at an NSA Convention in New York in 2008 and have been a fan of his work since then. In his book he asks two great questions that can help you overcome inertia.
As you go through your day evaluate every activity by asking yourself these questions:
- How much long term benefit and meaning did I experience from this activity?
- How much short term satisfaction or happiness did I experience?
I found that by using that questioning approach, I was more aware of how effective I was really being throughout the day.
One Tip on How to Bring Out the Best in People
- Realise that people develop at different rates, always be on the outlook for people's hidden capacities.
One Great Question to Ask Someone Each Day
- Ralph Waldo Emerson usually greeted Henry David Thoreau by asking, what has become clearer since we last met?
One Tip on Behaviour within the Workplace
- Stop using behaviour as an excuse to move forward.
One Tip on How to Overcome Inertia in the Workplace
- Every day do the difficult things first.
One Tip on How to Deal with Discouraging Times
- Never ever lose your inner belief that things are going to get better.
One Tip on How to Deal with a Crazy Schedule
- Take away one thing big from your daily schedule.
One Tip on How to Make it Easier to Get Things Done
- Ask yourself is it in alignment with your goals and learn to say two no's for every yes. Learn to be ruthless with saying no.
So for the month of September, I encourage you to move beyond inertia, find meaning in every activity you do each day and lead from the front.
